What is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is an extract of your own blood that contains a high concentration of platelets within the collected plasma. It is an autologous treatment to repair or regenerate impaired or non-functional tissue. An injection of PRP provides regenerative growth factors and essential healing nutrients directly to the target area.

PRP Therapy works by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. When tissue is injured, the body responds by sending specific ‘super healer’ cell types to the site of the injury to start the repair process. These ‘super healers’ are platletes and once injected, release growth factors and bioactive proteins which act as chemical controllers for cellular repair.

PRP is a simple procedure, performed at the clinic. A blood sample is collected and placed into a sterile PRP device. After centrifugation, over 90% of the platlets are precisely concentrated into a small volume of plasma, which is then collected for injection into the affected tendon, ligament or muscle.

  • Tendon – acute and chronic injuries, partial tears, tendonitis, tendonisis, tendonopathy and tensoynovitis
  • Ligament – acute and chronic injuries. Sprains and small partial tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Stalled healing and muscle injuries

For short-term relief PRP Therapy is to relieve pain and stiffness and increase function and mobility. For long term treatment it is to stop or slow disease progression to avoid disability and prevent or at least delay surgery.
